Archena was a young woman who "found threads and spun dreams".
Soon she made a name for herself as a skilled weaver, and even the wealthy came to admire her creations. Archena was so proud of her work that she claimed she could weave better than Athena - the goddess of wisdom, art, justice, and weaving. Athena took issue with Archena's arrogance and challenged her to a competition against the sea-god, Poseidon. The people of Athens chose Athena as their patron, but Archena chose to depict the misdeeds of the gods. Athena was furious that Archena would dare to challenge her in this way, and in her anger, she tore apart Archena's finished tapestry. Archena was humbled, but then Athena showed her mercy and turned her into a spider, saying "Thus is your life spun, but never again will you destroy my art."

Medusa was a beautiful young woman. She found favor in the eyes of Poseidon, the sea god, who ravished her in the temple of Athena (the goddess of wisdom and the patroness of warfare), thus defiling the temple. As a result, when Athena learned of the sacrilegious act, she punished Medusa and turned her into a monster with snakes for hair, who could turn anyone who looked at her into stone.
